Gordonsville today is a bustling small town full of charming stores and restaurants. At the crossroads of routes 15, 33 & 231, it has become a destination for a day of shopping. The new pocket park on Main Street is the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by.
Visit the Exchange Hotel and Civil War Museum on Main Street to learn about Gordonsville’s role in the Civil War, or as some people call it, the “Late Unpleasantness.” During the summer of 1862, Major General Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson stayed for a few days at the old Gordon Tavern and attended the Presbyterian Church which still stands on Main Street. Nearby are the battlefields of Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, and Trevilians.
Be sure to take a drive on route 231, a senic Virginia Byway. Go either north or south to enjoy the rolling hills and views of the mountains. Only eighty-one miles from Washington, D.C., sixty-two miles from Richmond, and eighteen miles from Charlottesville, Gordonsville is an easy place to reach. Several wineries are only a few minues from the center of town - Horton Vineyards, Barboursville Vineyards and Burnley Vineyards.
Montpelier, home of James and Dolley Madison is only six miles away. Monticello, home of Thomas and Martha Jefferson is in nearby Charlottesville as is Ash Lawn, home of James and Elizabeth Monroe.
Lake Anna State Park offers fishing, camping, swimming and boating on the 13,000 acre lake.
From Charlottesville, VA 18 miles
Rt. 29 north and turn right on Rt. 33. Follow Rt. 33 into downtown Gordonsville.
From Fredericksburg, VA 41 miles
Rt. 3 west to Rt. 20 to the town of Orange. Take Rt. 15 south to Gordonsville.
